1.0 FTE College of Creative Studies, sharing 50% with Department of Art, University of California Santa Barbara.

The College of Creative Studies and the Department of Art are seeking an exceptional artist to foster close collaboration between two art programs at the University of California Santa Barbara, specializing in Artists’ Books and Print Media (digital and analog) within an interdisciplinary and intermedia scope. Anticipated start date of July 1, 2019. We envisage the program evolving in future iterations through a direct engagement with the expanded field of contemporary art, opened up by the mix of social media, new print technologies, distribution platforms and delivery systems that are currently transforming not just the art and publishing worlds but the very definition of literacy. The ideal candidate will bring broad expertise in discourses of global contemporary art, knowledge and practice of traditional printmaking, letterpress printing, digital print methods, bookbinding, papermaking and a contemporary understanding of artists’ books, book works and text-based art making; as well as an enthusiasm for teaching the ways, means, and meanings of being an artist today and in the future.

Candidates are expected to have an MFA or an equivalent terminal degree from another country (MA); with demonstrated excellence in practice, research, and teaching to complement the Art Department’s strengths in art-making and theory, (see http://www.arts.ucsb.edu) and the College of Creative Studies focus on developing advanced art production in a select group of undergraduate students, (see https://ccs.ucsb.edu/majors/art), and take the pedagogical needs, values, and artistic/intellectual cultures of both Colleges into account.

The College of Creative Studies, UCSB, is a small college for self-directed students, providing a rigorous, accelerated program facilitating original undergraduate work. Uniquely, CCS faculty advise the students one-on-one, helping them form a studio practice from the onset. Art majors receive a BA in one of three emphases within the art program, Painting, Sculpture and Book Arts. The Department of Art is within the College of Letters and Science at UCSB and offers BA and MFA degrees in Art and interdisciplinary minors in Digital Art, Public Art, and Art. The Department programs provide contemporary, traditional, multi and interdisciplinary approaches to artistic production and are committed to creative research that investigates the relationship between practice and inquiry, and how this dynamic manifests itself in contemporary life. Both programs attract students who are self-motivated, visually and conceptually inventive and interested in being a part of an outstanding community of artists within a world-class Research I university.

Prospective candidates who are practicing artists with a strong exhibition record, who possess the potential to lead, collaborate, and organize curricular and programmatic needs, and who are committed, innovative teachers are encouraged to apply.
